A few weeks ago, we went to Castle Bytham Midsummer Fair, which had a 1940s theme. It was a nice day, despite the light rain, although we were short of crew. In the end, Michael and I did a training session with a couple of temporary NFS recruits filched (sorry borrowed) from the Civil Defenders, who portray Home Guard.
To help support local ventures, I took the TL into Lowdham School for their Summer Fair, and with the help of some of the teachers and fathers, got the ladder up. The fair had a 1940s theme, as the children of years 4 and 6 had been looking at the war in class. I have volunteered to go into the school for a single session to tell some stories of wartime firefighting before the imminent end of term.
And just today, on a visit to the Great Central Railway, I came across the Leicester Fire Museum stand with their lovely AFS Bikini Unit. Lovely to see it out and about, as they are gradually eliminating the mechanical gremlins
