Over the weekend of 2nd and 3rd June, a lone enemy bomber attacked a train in a remote railway yard to target the consignment of explosives and tanker of petrol arriving by train.
Railway workers, and the wife of the station yard foreman, were injured by shrapnel, and were taken to a nearby village hall where the WVS were able to look after them.
The NFS arrived with a mobile dam and used foam to put out the petrol fire, and water to cool down the nearby tanker.
By a happy coincidence, King George VI, Mr Winston Churchill and ‘Bomber’ Harris were in the area and came to inspect the brave workers, and to offer their support and encouragement.
